Exclamation STi at NY Auto Show sure hints at Subaru's "Toyobaru" 216a

This is pure speculation, however we cant help but get drawn in. The new STi is about to be announced at the New York Auto Show, images of the improved upon WRX have already been leaked. We have one question on our mind, are we looking at Toyobaru, or an Impreza STi?

Toyota's FT-86 equivalent the Subaru 086a / 216a or Toyobaru mule sure seems to to fit under the sheets seen below. Although one can argue that the Toyobaru couldn't of made it to production form in such a short time period since the Toyobaru mule was last caught in Orange County CA on February 23rd 2010. More likely what will be announced tomorrow is the Subaru Impreza WRX STi 4 door, which couldn't explain the 2 door coupe, Toyobaru mule or 086a / 216a.

However, the only difference between the two pictures is the 4 door and the 2 door coupe. So I ask you, could the new STi be the mysterious Toyobaru?! We will find out tomorrow...

Sorry for the crude phtoshop, we don't have the best images of the 086a / 216a

Like you said, probably not. But its nice to dream!

They sure do look about the same style. Makes you wonder how the 216a would fit into the lineup.

That is very interesting. We'll just have to wait and see.

Could you imagine if the Suby version came out before the Toyota version? Man that would suck (for the Toyota guys).

As impossible as the above mentioned sounds it would be awesome (for the Suby guys)

Just saw it too. Would have been much cooler if we got the "Toyobaru". The new STi doesn't have anything drastic to draw my interest, but I still love the car.

After seeing it again, I think I've concluded that I just really don't like the rear... The wing on that past gen STi sedan looked more fitting, and i def dont like the rear bumper... Overall I guess it's still okay, the front looks good, though almost identical to the hatch.

I agree. The car just doesn't have a unique identity now, it looks like a Honda or other econobox. At least the past gens had unique lines.

O well, I want an STi hatch or the toyobaru!

I like the new STI but I'm still a fan of the late model "bug eyed" version. Sometimes the economy is to blame for all the freekishly similar looking vehicles out there. Not many companies want to be unique by taking big risks like Toyota and their FT 86.

yes, the economy can be blamed but
Toyota hasn't been trying that hard
they dont even offer a mildly sporty version of any car right now
... scion doesn't count
even though honda stopped the s2k, at least they still offer an Si model civic
if anything id go with mazda and nissan, with the rx8 and 370z
subaru actually did claim they were trying to be "more economy" though when they released the new imprezas for 08
disliked by fans, but brought in new potential buyers...

but hopefully once the economy heals, subaru will stop heading in this direction

i love absolutely everything about it. aggressive yet complacent and seemingly capable, and clean. although i prefer a 4 door, i think id still sway FT-86 for RWD. both are definitely at the top of my list along with the next gen 1 series.

actually i lied in the first part, first order of business would be to replace w 2.5i or wrx rear bumper and remove wing. although i suppose those may both be reactions to people saying how the front is always has so much more going on with subarus

I agree on those two. That bumper and wing is major fail.

Sadly I think the new STi will look way better out of the "showroom" and in the hands of us fans. Lower it, flush wheels, etc. Its got the wide fenders and front end which to me defines part of the Impreza. For some reason the show pictures just cant do justice. I would prefer a STi wagon over the sedan.

First the Evo was bastardized now the STI. Sigh... Thankfully Toyota is aware that cars still need to be sexy.

Unhappy

Got to admit, I'm disappointed. Scoobies have always been agressive looking and not something you'd want to see in your rearview mirror. This, even with the bonnet scoop, just doesnt look anything like as good as the last generation Sedan. Subaru look like they've missed the plot on this one.......Gutted

I still don't care for these cars. But the sedan Sti looks a lot better then the hatch's IMO.

After looking at them again, I have come to the conclusion that the hatch sucks balls. Then again that is slightly bias since the only hatch I've ever liked was the 240sx hatch.

This sedan looks.....passable.

I agree. For me it's the color more then anything. It just doesn't say Suby Rally car to me. They should be gold.
