"Bee-rok" Revenge! Toyota FT-86 Concept

Google Translate:

The highlight of the exhibition of the Toyota FT-86 world premiere of the concept. "Rok bee", but many people would come and listen and lead, prestigious automobiles "AE86" revival called the compact FR sports coupe's.

Corolla Levin AE86, was released in 83 / Super tureno (direct 4,1.5 / 1.6L) brothers car. I already have space-efficient compact cars FF (front drive) had become an era of daring FR (rear-drive) Toyota in question to the world, the popularity of youth sports at the time as an introduction to some serious car Ta. The model has now become a legend of the middle.

86 concept, of course, AE86 is hardly the same class. Width is 1760 mm and larger in size and number three, horizontally opposed engine 2L (naturally aspirated) gain. However, that dare FR +6 speed manual floor shift, the basic design is now an endangered species now, enough "back Occitane bees" to impress. Toyota is "the joy of driving the original car, to manipulate the mercy of emotional FR sports" are positioned.

When the market is undecided. However, in recent years Toyota, Altezza, MR2, and the market proven rear-wheel drive models such as. Many fans will look forward to the release.

Motortrend: 2009 Tokyo: Toyota Develops FT-86 Will Elicit 'Intrinsic Joy' - Wide Open Throttle - Motor Trend Magazine

Most development work underway on the Toyota FT-86 is being done by Subaru engineers. After all, Toyota chief Akio Toyoda points to the four-cylinder boxer engine, allowing "racecar-like handling," even though it's on Subie's first rear-drive platform in recent memory. Toyota is handling the styling and packaging in this joint venture, which began after General Motors dumped its interest in Fuji Heavy Industries and Toyota Motor Company took up the slack.

The FT-86 has some Celica/Supra in its sheetmetal, especially the nose and hood. The fast roofline and short rear overhang hints that the rear seats -- the concept features 2+2 racing buckets -- are useful for show and for toddlers at best. A distinctive front fender crease picks up from the rear of the wheel opening and extends up into the hood, as if to call attention to the diminutive sport coupe's dash-to-axle ratio. The concept is just 163.8-inches long (about half a foot longer than a Miata) on a 101.2-inch wheelbase.

It's 69.3 inches wide and just 49.6 inches tall. "It is often said that young people today have drifted away from cars," Toyota president and scion Toyoda said, "but I feel that it may not be the customers who have drifted away from cars, but us, the manufacturers." He continued, "The FT-86 Concept was developed to give form to the intrinsic joy automobiles provide -- things like the accelerator and steering exactly matching the driver's intentions and the feeling of wanting to drive more -- and to provide it to customers as soon as possible." That means, in the case of the Toyota FT-86, early 2012.

Jalopnik: Toyota FT-86 Concept: The AE86 Is Back In The Red, Metallic Flesh - Toyota FT-86 - Jalopnik

We've seen the Toyota FT-86 for a couple of weeks, carefully dissected the delicious, metallic red sports car in any way we can, but now we've actually seen it in the flesh and Toyota's got some serious hotness here.

What's that? You can't imagine a Toyota that might consider offering a fun, affordable, two door with a modicum of sportiness and some seriously interesting style? Might we introduce you to the Toyota FT-86 concept — the first Toyota (barring the epic Lexus LFA) we've been genuinely excited about since the... um... Supra? Wow, that took entirely too long.

Autoblog: Tokyo 2009: Toyota unveils FT-86 Concept, keeps mum on details — Autoblog

We got a sneak peak of the FT-86 earlier this month, and now Toyota has just officially revealed its new two-seater concept here at the Tokyo Motor Show. It's been a while since the Japanese automaker has offered anything resembling a sports car – especially one with rear-wheel drive – so there was plenty of excitement when the covers were pulled off the FT-86. The coupe looks stunning in person, and we particularly like the details like the carbon-fiber rear diffuser and the stunning white leather seats.

We were hoping for more information about the FT-86 at its debut, but Toyota is still keeping quiet about the specific details of the car that is tipped for production in late 2011. Rumor has it that a Subaru 2.0-liter flat-four will be sending power to the rear wheels, and that keeping weight down to a minimum will be a top priority. We'll be sure to bring you more details as we get them, but until then check out our high-res gallery of live photos below.

Automobile: 2009 Tokyo Show: Toyota FT-86 Concept | Auto Shows Blog & Discussion at Automobile Magazine

Toyota introduced its FT-86 concept Wednesday, unofficially announcing its return to the mainstream sports car market.

典he FT-86 Concept was developed to give form to the intrinsic joy automobiles provide things like the accelerator and steering exactly matching the driver痴 intentions, said Toyota president Akio Toyoda.

The rear-wheel-drive, four-seat FT-86 (86 is pronounced 塗achi roku) is the result of Toyota痴 collaboration with Subaru. Propulsion comes from a 2.0-liter boxer engine paired to a manual transmission.

Toyota has not provided any power or weight specs, but promises 途acecar-like handling. Its compact body - about eight inches shorter than a Porsche Cayman bears strong resemblance to the Lexus LF-A, especially in its nose, but also has some similarity to the Nissan 370Z.

Although there痴 no official word yet on the concept痴 future, its interior and exterior styling does not appear far from production. Toyoda made clear his feeling that the company needs a modern successor to its Supra, Altezza and MR-S models.

典he fact that none of these vehicles is still being produced makes me, a serious car fan, really sad, he said.

Autocar UK Tokyo video: 'Toyobaru' FT-86 - Autocar.co.uk

This is the rear-wheel-drive sports coupe that Toyota and Subaru have been co-developing behind closed doors in Japan.

In this unusual joint venture, Toyota and Subaru will each produce their own versions of the car, with sales kicking off in late 2011. Subaru will build all the cars at its Gunma factory in Japan and Subaru’s naturally aspirated 2.0-litre flat four will provide the power for both cars.

Want to find out more? Click the right-hand button and then choose ‘CC’ to turn on video captions.

This concept car, badged FT-86, is the Toyota version and is very similar to the proposed production car. The company will be relying on it to restore driver appeal to the Toyota line-up, something that’s been missing since the demise of the Celica and MR2.
It’s also a car Toyota sees as rekindling the spirit of its one of its old 1980s stars: the similarly codenamed AE-86 Corolla GT, whose easily driftable rear-wheel-drive chassis and eager 1.6-litre twin-cam engine has made it an enduring hero in Japan.
This is a project Toyota has wanted to do for some time now, in order to improve its image and increase its credibility with young Japanese drivers, who have become increasingly less interested in cars in recent years. But for a number of reasons, including the lack of a suitably sporty engine, Toyota’s money men kept it in limbo.
Toyota also wants to keep the car affordable.A target price of ・2 million (」14,000 at current rates) is the ideal, but with two years still to go until production that could yet change. A price of about 」18k is more likely in the UK.
The car’s styling is credited to Toyota’s ED2 studio in the south of France. The profile shows the clear influence of the FT-HS, Toyota’s 2007 hybrid show concept, with elements of the Nissan 370Z visible in the roofline.
Toyota is keen to push the car’s driver appeal and what it terms ‘emotional performance’, describing the car as small, light and easy to control. At 4160mm long and 1760mm wide, it’s slightly shorter and narrower than an Audi TT, and at 1260mm high it’s also lower.
Under the bonnet is the current Subaru 2.0-litre flat four, as used in the Impreza, but by the time the coup goes into production it may use the next-generation boxer unit. The current engine produces 146bhp and 141lb ft of torque, but the new engine could go up to 160bhp, with lower CO2 emissions. A turbo would increase performance but would also increase the price.

The Subaru engine has several advantages. It’s compact, light, smooth and nicely balanced. But more critical for Toyota is the structure of the unit, which allows engineers to keep the car’s centre of gravity low. The gearbox will be a conventional six-speed manual.

Toyota says the coup is based on “an all-new platform”, although there has been speculation that this will be a shortened Impreza chassis converted to rear-wheel drive.
The FT-86 has struts at the front with rear double wishbones, as does the Impreza.
Keeping the weight down will be crucial. Toyota was able to build this car’s antecedent, the Corolla GT coup, to weigh 960kg, but this time it will be nearer 1200kg.
The FT-86 officially seats four, but in reality it’s going to be a 2+2. The show car’s interior, decked out in grey, has some unusual touches, such as a big, oval instrument panel, with minor controls and unusually slim air vents mounted on the console and dashboard.
Toyota won’t confirm that the final production car will look exactly like the FT-86, and things may change in the next couple of years. But the car is already at the running prototype stage, and if development goes according to plan it could be unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo motor show, with an on-sale date in 2012.

CarDealerMagazine Car Dealer Magazine TOKYO: Toyota sleeker Capri

The rear-wheel-drive coupe has certainly grabbed the headlines here at the firm’s stand in Tokyo.

That’s because it looks utterly superb.

All creases, curves and angles, there really is no missing it. Making it all the more incredible that it really is a production-intent model – and, not only that, but it will pack in five seats, too.

Such usability and practicality, after all, is what made the Capri a huge sales hit…

For when, then? Two years could be a possibility, said the car’s chief engineer. ‘But if you put pressure on us, we could do it quicker!’ GET BUSY, THEN! (Please.)

It is powered by a 2.0-litre boxer engine. If that sounds a bit Subaru, then you’d be right. Toyota’s Japanese neighbour is also going to sell the FT-86 as its own version, too.

Toyota car dealers will be first, though, with a showroom-filling halo car that’s going to appeal to loads, we reckon. Question is, are you as smitten as we are?

If you’re not yet, listen up: the chief engineer also said the handling is being honed to aid easy control while drifting. Well, in a roundabout (excuse the pun) way, he did.

‘Balance is important: stability on the limit is the most important trait. I don’t care about static weight distribution – I want it best for drift control.’

Also here on the Toyota stand is an electric version of the IQ – the FT-EQ II. With two seats and charismatic styling, Toyota reckons it could be on sale by 2012.

By which time, it could be sharing showroom space with the FT-86, and twin-test space with the Nissan LandGlider…
