Vehicle registration varies from state-to-state. Here in Colorado it is based on age and value of the vehicle and it's almost considered a "property tax". When I registered my new 2009 BMW, I paid almost $900

As regards to fuel, there is a Federal Gasoline Tax (18.4 cents) that is supposed to go towards road maintenance and new projects, plus each state levies their own tax rate, Colorado's is 22 cents. So with regular gasoline right now at $2.49/gallon - 40 cents is just taxes.
